eclectic Thursday

Micmacs is a 2009 French crime fantasy comedy film by French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Jeunet also directed Amelie, and The City of Lost Children. Its original French title is Micmacs à tire-larigot, (non-stop shenanigans). The film is billed as a satire on the world arms trade. The beginning is off to a rough and rather gruesome start...but once I got past the first scene I found this film enchanting.

I love foreign films...this one is a favorite and thought I'd share it.
And can't forget good music for the day...

I'm a total fan of DeVotchka  (Gypsy punk music)...and I actually like some of the lesser known music by this band that sounds like Polka music (it's also referred to as polka rock or circus music)... Yep...you read that right...circus music! I guess I'm still in my circus anomalies phase.  If you read Ricky Jay's Journal of Anomalies you can see where this influence comes from...and that actually began with my search through the works of photographers such as Diane ArbusLisette Model. and Vivian Maier.  I digress....back to the music...DeVotchka uses instruments not always seen in music today such a the theremin,  bouzouki,  violin,  accordian,  sousaphone, double bass, and flute. It's not for everyone...but I find it  interesting.

DeVotchka (Russian for girl) are from Denver...and this song was actually featured in another very favorite movie of mine...Everything is Illuminated. Another must see....if you're  also a collector of meaningful movies.

DeVotchKa is the best at making me feel happy and sad simultaneously with their haunting melodies... I ask myself whether it's happy or sad, then I realize it simply.....is.

If you should find you like listening to DeVotchka...I'd say to add The Clockwise Witness.
Much of their music was also featured in the movie Little Miss Sunshine.
Okay so this makes two songs...oops!

AHH OOOOOOO;)

Would love to hear what you're watching and listening to.

Ah...I am so glad to be back and reading all that you have to post. Such wonderful stuff, Karen! Love the post about religion. I attend a Unity church here in Calif. and I love it. The pastor there says that we take the Burger King approach: you can have it your way! I love that! I can believe in whatever or whomever I want and I am not wrong, only accepted.---Love the pic of Nora with her weeding tool. How sweet and wonderful. The garden is really coming along. I can't wait to get out in my new garden space here. He has raised beds and I noticed some strawberries when I was out there the other day. And I am so appreciative of the movie recommendations and the music. Now that I have "high speed" (yippee!) I can listen and watch these kinds of things without the starting and stopping all the time. Have a great Mother's Day. I think that all I want is to rest all day. What a gift that would be. I have been painting my bedroom for the last couple of days. I know...that sounds like a long time but I have things that take me away occasionally and then I have to return when I am not too tired to continue. It just might take me a year, who knows! Who cares!

I also now have high speed internet connectivity and what a difference it makes in downloading and watching videos! (That is in response to Teri's comment.)

I always appreciate new ideas of movies to watch and things to read, so thanks for that. I saw Water for Elephants the other day and enjoyed it, since it followed the book pretty closely.

thanks for the head's up on micmacs!!

we share music and film tastes!! not so surprising!!

i'm happy to report that the cleveland public library has 42 copies of the dvd in its collection and i put a hold on it and soon a copy will be zipping its way to my local branch.

last dvd watched was 'white palms' (from the library) a hungarian film by the director of one of my favorite films (bibliothèque pascal) of this year's cleveland international film festival.

if you love foreign films you must plan an escape for a couple/few days next spring (late march) to cleveland - i will treat you with non-stop films (details to provided under separate cover)....

by the way, here's the trailer for bibliothèque pascal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBBNftn9Q5E
